Location, location, location

Since entering the wonderful world of photography, I have learned to see the world differently than ever before.  I see the world through my lens.  When I am driving I am ALWAYS looking for places to take pictures (which can often times being a driving hazard…my husband can attest to that.)  When I see a field I am visualizing how it will look through a particular lens with my camera set at specific settings.  I don’t just see flowers and grass, but I see the colors and textures and they way the textures appear through the blur of my lens in the forground or background of the image.  Sometimes the colors will look more vivid in my eyes because I am looking at the final product as I visualize the scene.  I know what can take place in photoshop to intensify the colors, brighten the image, and enhance the mood of the image.  I see all this when I take in the scene.  Often time clients will be a bit surprised at the location I’ve brought them too.  I can see a bit of doubt on their faces when they look at the surroundings, but they aren’t seeing the final result like I am.  They aren’t seeing it through my lens and my eyes.  They trust me though and the results are better than they expect.

Being a photographer, I realize more now how important it is to trust the vision of your photographer.  When I get my own pictures taken I prefer to not interject too many of my own ideas.  I prefer to follow their vision…it will always produce the best results.  I know from my own experience that if I can’t visualize it then it won’t turn out great.  I know I do my best work when I can be free to follow my own vision and capture my subjects as I see fit.

Some of my favorite locations are ones I stumble across when I least expect it.  About 6 weeks about I was driving down a road I’ve driven down hundreds of times before, but at this particular time there were Day Lillies growing wild along side of the road.  The light was beautiful, the grass length was perfect, and there was a beautiful backdrop of trees behind the scene as well.  One thing I’ve learned about doing sessions in the natural surroundings is that the scenery can change in any particular spot throughout the year…and from year to year.  You have to take advantage of the moment when you see it.  Right when I saw this particular spot I spoke to my client sessions I had coming up that week and told them I wanted to do their photos in this new spot.  They were more than willing, so I shot 3 sessions in one week in the same location.  I’m so grateful I did because the lillies are gone now and I doubt that spot will ever look the same again.  Here are some photos in the lillies and grass.

Senior Session

I’m way over due for a blog post and I’ve got lots to blog about, so stay tuned because I plan to do some catching up here.  I just wanted to take a minute to share a few pictures from a recent senior session.  Senior sessions are probably my favorite, and this session was no exception.  The weather was absolutely perfect this day too.

Loved the sun flare in these shots…and the awesome tree!  I’m a big fan of cool trees!

Mom and sister joined in for a few shots too.  Aren’t they all so dang beautiful?!!

Senior Session

Just wanted to post a few pics from a recent senior session.  I think these were the most difficult weather conditions I’ve ever shot in.  It was overcast and was misting quite heavily.  We talked before the session and decided to go ahead with it not realizing how much drizzle was coming down.  She was such a trooper in the rain and cold and despite the challenging weather we got some good shots.  Of coarse it helped she was rather photogenic.  In this first shot if you look close you can see the rain coming down.

Grace

I can’t tell you how glad I am that Spring is almost here.  The weather is getting better, which means more of these awesome outdoor sessions that I just love.  I had the pleasure of photographing Grace on two separate occasions because it was too cold the first time to finish the outdoor portion of her session.  We tried the first time and she nearly froze to death after 5 minutes.  It was soooo cold!!  Grace is such a sweet and talented girl who has the perfect pair of shoes for every outfit! :)  And I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her mom too.  It was a lot of fun.  I look forward to doing some family pictures for them too!  Here are few of my favorite shots from both sessions.  I especially love this first one with the bold primary colors.

Shelby - Senior Album

I thought since I just posted Annie’s senior album it would be good to post another senior album with a different design style in order to showcase a bit of a variety.  I posted quite a few of Shelby’s pictures in the past so these may look familiar to some of you.  It is always fun to see how they come together in an album.  The pages follow accordingly:

Oh how time flies!

I had the opportunity to do Annie’s senior photos late last summer.  I can’t believe she is a Senior this year.  I’ve known her for about 8 years now.  That means she was only 10 years old when I met her (that is how old my oldest son is now!)  I’ve never lived anywhere as long as I’ve lived here in Kansas City so it is amazing to me to see such changes go by in the people that surround you.  When you live near them you often times don’t realize the change as it just gradually passes by over the years….and then all of sudden it is like “Woah, what happened?!”  Another 8 years and my own child will be graduating.  Man, time sure flies!  It reminds to keep embracing the moments, because they never happen again.

Annie is such a great person-smart, cute, very responsible, a good example to her peers, fun, a great baby-sitter (wish you were here to still do that for me), and she even helped me out on a few photoshoots.  I’m sad, though, because she no longer lives here.  Her dad got a new job out in Tennesse so she moved out there a couple of months ago.  We just got done putting her senior album together so I thought I would share it.  We had a lot of fun during her photoshoot and I think we got a great variety.  This will be printed as a 10×10 press-printed storybook album.  The first image you’ll see is the cover (front is the right side of image, and the back is the left of the image.)  The rest of the pages following accordingly.  With the exception of pages 1 and 20, the images show the full 2 page spreads you would see in the album when having it open.  I wish you all the best on your new adventures, Annie.  I know you’ll do great!

Senior Update

Goodness, I’ve had so much to blog about but little time to do it.  So for lack of a better blog post I decided to post a sample of what I’ve been up to lately.  I thought I’d break this down into 2 separate blog posts: one for seniors, and the next will be for families and children.  I want so much to take the time to talk about each of these young adults, but for now a few pictures of each of them will have to suffice.  They are all so beautiful and talented.  I love this age!

And this gorgeous girl isn’t a senior yet, but I just loved this shot and felt like it fit well enough into this category.

Shelby-Senior Portraits 2

I really get to know a lot about an individual when I am photographing them.  So much about who they really are shows through as I view them through the lens.   I loved working with Shelby and I had the opportunity to do two sessions with her!  We ran out of time the first session so we scheduled another to capture more shots (and I’m so glad we did as I just love this second series of photos).  Something I love about Shelby other than her fun and charismatic personality (she made me laugh a lot), is the level of self-confidence that she has.  The level of confidence the girl (or boy) has can really impact how well a session goes.  When you lack confidence with who you are it will show in the pictures and the results aren’t as great as they could be as when an individual believes in themself and knows that they really are beautiful.  In fact, it makes me sad to see a young adult (or anyone for that matter) lack confidence in themself.  Everyone is beautiful and has so much to contribute to this life in a way that noone else can.  I believe that truly noone can take your place.  So, Shelby, I commend you for your self-confidence and all the accomplishments you have achieved thus far.  I know you’ll go far in life.

I thought I would share a few quotes that I love about confidence throughout this post:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won’t feel insecure around you.  We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It’s not just in some of us; it’s in all of us.  And when we let out own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”  -Maryanne Williamson

“When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun.  And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.”  -Unknown

“Confidence, like art, never comes from having all the answers; it comes from being open to all the questions.” -Unknown

“Confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong.”  -Peter T. Mcintyre

“Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside of them was superior to circumstance.  -Bruce Barton

“People are like stained-glass windows.  They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.”  -Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

And lastly, I leave you with my favorite quote about confidence:

“One of the greatest moments in anybody’s developing experience is when he no longer tries to hide from himself but determines to get aquainted with himself as he really is.”  -Norman Vincent Peale

Here is a fun slideshow of several images from both sessions:

Lauren - Senior Portraits

High school seniors are among my very favorite subjects to photograph.  It is probably one of my favorite ages ever.  It was such an exciting time in my own life so I can’t help but feel excited for them too.  I am constantly impressed with their talent and creativity and wonderful personalities.  Lauren is no exception.  Not only is she beautiful, but she is super smart and super talented.  She is captain of her dance team (and has been for 3 years). She’s been been a class officer for the last 2 years at the least, and is a member of the math honor society & national honor society.  She is probably blushing right now reading this too, so I’ll not mention any specific numbers here, but her GPA is ultra high as well as her ACT score.  She reluctantly told me her score after her parents proudly pressured her to tell me, so you can also see how genuinely humble and sweet she really is too.   (Sorry Lauren, I just couldn’t resist bragging.)  AND…she just so happens to be my neice–from my husband’s side of the family.   She lives in Virginia but asked if I’d take her senior photos when she came out this summer.  Thanks for asking me Lauren.  I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know you a little better and I had a lot of fun too.

Couldn’t resist pulling out the “lensbaby” for a few shots.  Either you love or hate the “lensbaby” look.  I LOVE IT!

And here are a few shots her dad took of us during the session.  The bottom left picture of me was taken with my lensbaby.  When I asked him what lenses he had he brought out the Canon 135mm f/2L.  Needless to say I was super thrilled because that is a lens I’ve been wanting so I asked him if we could trade for a bit….he used the lensbaby while I got to test drive the 135 f/2.  Thanks Chuck, it was fun!

Sneak Peak–Shelby

Check out this super gorgeous high school senior.  She is just as beautiful on the inside as she is the outside.  After talking to her mom on the phone I knew I was going to enjoy this session…and I did.  They are both so laid back and fun to be around and Shelby did a great job being in front of the camera.  There are so many I could show from this session, but this is just a sneak peak so I narrowed it down to a small handful.

I was too lazy to remove the tan lines in these next shots…I just wanted to show her cute laugh in these.
