Beautiful Baby!

I just wanted to share a few from a recent session of this darling little 9 month old baby.  I’ve been photographing her since birth and I just adore this family!  My first impression of the mom was how calm and peaceful she was.  I couldn’t possibly imagine her ever raising her voice at one of her kids.  The kids are just at sweet and loving towards one another.  They are truly a beautiful family on the inside and out.

We did this session at the Kauffman Gardens and it was so darn hot outside.  Regardless of the heat, I think we still got some beautiful images.

Location, location, location

Since entering the wonderful world of photography, I have learned to see the world differently than ever before.  I see the world through my lens.  When I am driving I am ALWAYS looking for places to take pictures (which can often times being a driving hazard…my husband can attest to that.)  When I see a field I am visualizing how it will look through a particular lens with my camera set at specific settings.  I don’t just see flowers and grass, but I see the colors and textures and they way the textures appear through the blur of my lens in the forground or background of the image.  Sometimes the colors will look more vivid in my eyes because I am looking at the final product as I visualize the scene.  I know what can take place in photoshop to intensify the colors, brighten the image, and enhance the mood of the image.  I see all this when I take in the scene.  Often time clients will be a bit surprised at the location I’ve brought them too.  I can see a bit of doubt on their faces when they look at the surroundings, but they aren’t seeing the final result like I am.  They aren’t seeing it through my lens and my eyes.  They trust me though and the results are better than they expect.

Being a photographer, I realize more now how important it is to trust the vision of your photographer.  When I get my own pictures taken I prefer to not interject too many of my own ideas.  I prefer to follow their vision…it will always produce the best results.  I know from my own experience that if I can’t visualize it then it won’t turn out great.  I know I do my best work when I can be free to follow my own vision and capture my subjects as I see fit.

Some of my favorite locations are ones I stumble across when I least expect it.  About 6 weeks about I was driving down a road I’ve driven down hundreds of times before, but at this particular time there were Day Lillies growing wild along side of the road.  The light was beautiful, the grass length was perfect, and there was a beautiful backdrop of trees behind the scene as well.  One thing I’ve learned about doing sessions in the natural surroundings is that the scenery can change in any particular spot throughout the year…and from year to year.  You have to take advantage of the moment when you see it.  Right when I saw this particular spot I spoke to my client sessions I had coming up that week and told them I wanted to do their photos in this new spot.  They were more than willing, so I shot 3 sessions in one week in the same location.  I’m so grateful I did because the lillies are gone now and I doubt that spot will ever look the same again.  Here are some photos in the lillies and grass.

Toddlers in Spring

I had some cute little toddlers turning one this Spring.  This is such a fun age to capture and we had some beautiful weather and surroundings to capture them in.  I love Spring!!  This first little girl has not only been in front of my camera for a year now, but I’ve also been photographing her older brother since he was a newborn as well.  I just love this family.

I’ve been photographing this little girl since she was born as well.  I always love the field shots so I was happy to do some in this shoot…the grass is so pretty.

The one year old in these next shots was one of happiest little toddlers I’ve ever met.  She was always smiling….so cute!

And I just had to end with a couple shots from this adorable little girl’s 6 month session.  I just love these shots with dad!

February Special!!

Well, it’s that time of year when the weather is a bit crummy and somewhat unpredictable…okay, REALLY unpredictable, but some really great pictures can still be taken.  While most of the work I do is outdoors, I do some indoor pictures as well.  If you don’t mind bundling up in some fun hats, scarfs and jackets then a fun outdoor session might be just right for you, or maybe this is the time of year to have your children captured in their element indoors having a tea party or jumping on the bed.  The possibilities are endless and I am running a special for the month of February only!!

Standard session fee is $75 (that’s $50 off the regular price of $125)!  Sessions must be booked, completed, and paid for in the month of February to get the discount.  (This discount does not apply to the mini-session.)  Pass the news onto your friends and don’t wait to get your session scheduled.

Can’t do a post without a picture so here is one from a recent indoor session.  These sisters are 3 months and 3 years old.  I just love how this shot turned out!

Growing Up

Well, after a much needed Holiday break I’m back in the saddle again.  I’m so grateful that this last year was such a busy year for me–thank you to everyone I’ve had the opportunity to photograph.  I wish I had the time last year to blog more about my work so this year I’ve made it a high priority to commit some more time to this blog, to share more about me and my work and all the wonderful and inspiring people I meet!  I’d like to take some time this month to share some of last years work and to start off with I’d thought I’d post some pictures of Harper.  Almost one year ago I shared some of Harper’s newborn pictures here.  Now look how much she has grown up.

Here she is at 3 months:

And 6 months:

I love just love this next shot!

And these are from her most recent session at 9 months:

This last shot is one of my favorites.  The mom emailed me and said it looks like Harper is putting a star on a Christmas tree in this shot (this was taken in December too).  Of coarse it wasn’t planned and that is what I love the most about it.  It was a happy suprise!  It couldn’t have turned out more perfect if it were planned.

Baby Merritt

I know, I know…I stink at blogging this year.  I’m so gosh darn busy something had to give and I chose blogging.  Next year I will resolve to post more of all the work I’ve been doing.  For now, I just wanted to take a minute to congratulate Mike and Sara on the arrival of their newest addition, Merritt.  They now have 4 beautiful girls.  You may or may not remember the first blog post I did a long while back that had the slideshow of the birth of Cricket.  Well Cricket is the little girl on the far right of this picture.  And that adorable hat and sweater she is wearing was hand knitted by grandma!  I love hand knitted stuff.  Anyway, I just had to share this picture.  It melts my heart to look at it.  I love how they are all adoring their new little baby sister.  Sara, I think when others see this picture on your Christmas cards this year they will be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas because that is what I think and feel when I look at this sweet picture.  It makes me think of the birth of Jesus.  It seems to capture the pure love of a child, and reminds me of the blessing that loved ones and family are to us.  May we cherish the blessings of love, peace, and family this Christmas season!

Sneak Peak-Giving is Awesome Winner

For those of you who didn’t hear about the “Giving Is Awesome” contest I had earlier this year and who the winner was you can read about it HERE. Bobbie Harsch’s story is heart wrenching and as I read her blog and got to know her a little better I couldn’t help but think about how strong, brave, optimistic and admirable she is. Her little boy is darling too! Here is just a sneak peak from their session. More to come…

Family & Friends

Well, as I mentioned in the previous post, I took a trip to Utah to shoot the Jone’s wedding.  I spent a few extra days out there visiting family and old friends as well.  It was so much fun!  Just after I got off the plane my older sister picked me up and took me out to eat at Cafe Rio.  Yummmmm!!  I am in love with their Pork Barbacoa Salad.  (I wish we had one here in Kansas City.)   So, it was good food and good company as I enjoyed visiting with my sister.

Just after lunch I went to spend some time with Shell, my old college roommate at Brigham Young University.  We were roommates for 3 years and I loved it.  She was always such a good example to me and great to talk to.  I miss our talks Shell!!  And…I miss sharing jeans, clothes, perfume, etc. :)  It was rejuvinating to chat again and pick right back up as if very little time has passed (even though it’s been several years!)  She just had a little baby boy 2 weeks prior to our visit so we took lots of pictures of her 2 kids and precious new baby!  Here are some of my favorites.

Her little girl has the most beautiful brown eyes I’ve ever seen!

There is something I love about this “pouty” picture…

I love this next shot.  She was listing to her baby brother’s heart beat.

I love his cute little side profile and wrinkles on his side in this next shot.

And here is the lovely Shell with her precious newborn.

It was so good to see you!  I should mention that Shell is an artist…and a great one too.  She painted a portait of my daughter in sepia and it looks wonderful.  I don’t know if the picture here does it justice, but I love it.  I am excited for her to paint my boys now!!  Thank you so much, Shell!

After visiting my friend I spent lots of time with family.  I come from a family of 5 kids and 3 of my siblings live in Utah.  It was such fun to see them all.

I also really enjoyed the time I spent with my parents, particularly my dad.  My dad does photography as well and has for many years.  You can see his work on Flickr:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/pop38/.  When I first started to take an interest in photography my dad was my very first mentor!  It seems I was calling him almost every day with questions.  Going digital was quite a change at first and he was the one that helped me transition and got me started in Adobe editing software.  It has been such a blessing to share a common passion with my dad as it has created a new bond between us that I am really grateful for.  I often find myself asking what I would do without my parents.  My mom is always such a great emotional support and my dad has been such a support and help with photography.  I don’t take for granted what a blessing it is to be able to pick up the phone and call either of them any time I want to share my new excitement about winning a contest… to share a photo I’m proud of… to talk photoshop and equipment… vent frustrations about life … talk about what funny things the kids did, etc., etc.  I am so blessed.

My dad spent the day helping me shoot the wedding.  The photo on the left is one I took of my dad while I was testing light and a location for a bridal.  The photo on the right is one Jefra took of me and my dad shooting…along with several others shooting.  Can you count how many cameras there are?!

Before the day of the wedding we took a photo adventure in the mountains.  Scenics and still life are my dad’s favorite subjects.  Obviously portraits are still mine because I think I took more shots of him shooting than of the scenery.  I got caught in the act too so he shot me back! :)

I did manage to get some shots of these Teasels (sp?).  My dad told me they got their name from what they were used for.  They use to brush them on fabric to create a soft nap in the home spun fabrics.  (I hope I explained that right, anyway.)

And once again I am shooting my dad shooting the scenics…I’d be sad if I didn’t have these shots of him in his element, though.

I did manage to get some good scenic shots myself.  Not bad for a portrait photographer, eh?!

Well, that was a brief overview of my adventure to Utah.  It was a great visit with friends and family and I was so pleased the wedding went so smooth.  Thankfully, I’ll be back out in July for some more fun!

Baby Addisyn

Well look who just became a big brother!!!

You may remember this little guy here.  I followed him for the first year, and now I get to watch his little sister Addisyn grow too.  I am so pleased because they are such a great family…very laid back and fun to be around.

Addisyn didn’t sleep too much at first, which was alright because I got some adorable shots of her awake.  In fact, I have never captured a newborn shot like this next one.  She is only 9 days old in this shot and she looks older than that to me here.  I can’t believe how well she was already holding her head up.  Isn’t she darling?!

She was rather alert in this mom and baby shot too.

Finally we got some peaceful shots of her sleeping.  This shot is very similar to her brother’s newborn shot.

I just love this last shot of her here.  I had to add the quote just for fun.

Well congrats Landyn on becoming a big brother.  I know you’ll do a great job.

Welcoming Harper Grace

I just had the opportunity to photograph this darling little newborn girl at only 1 week of age.  Her name is Harper Grace and she weighs in at 7 lbs. 5 oz.   I will have the opportunity to photograph Harper over the next year.  I look forward to capturing her and watching her grow.   This shot below is pretty simple and straight forward, but it is the simplicity and sweetness that I love about it.  She looks like a little angle.

I don’t typically do too many newborn shots in color but there is something I loved about the color in this shot below.  Maybe it is the mother’s vibrant red hair contrasting with the soft, fair skin tones.  I should mention that the mother is a hair stylist and I kept having to try to “fix” her bangs for her as they kept falling in her face.  Normally I feel very confident “fussing” with my clients hair to help perfect it for the pictures, but I felt rather intimidated trying to fix a hair stylist’s hair.  So I am really sorry if I didn’t fix it to your standards, mom….I take full responsibility. :)

I love the little “smiling” moment I caught with them in the middle portrait below.  It was somewhat candid.

Welcome to the world little Harper Grace.  I look forward to seeing you in 3 months!

And I wouldn’t want to end this post without including something from their maternity session.
